European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US on five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.

Other Developments in the News

In other legal developments:

  • A federal judge has halted attempts to cut security grants to local governments which resist specific federal immigration rules. The official stated the action was “another example” of linking federal aid to policy compliance.
  • Authorization was issued for the dispatch of 350 national guard members to a major US city ahead of the holiday period, coinciding with an ongoing border security initiative.
  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to accept a limited number of individuals from the US in exchange for increased assistance, after signing a formal agreement with US authorities.

Additionally, a Democratic lawmaker has initiated legal action seeking the removal of the current president’s name from a well-known performing arts center in the capital.

Analysts have also noted that comments regarding foreign petroleum resources reflect a broader belief in certain circles of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy actions.
