Federal Reserve Cuts Interest Rates for Second Time This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank lowered borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction this year amid financial volatility stemming from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The move to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release notes. “Price increases has risen and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, including the count of new jobs added to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in early September, prior to the closure, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of jobs created to the market in the summer month was down by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Decline

Though the bureau was set to release September’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its publication once the shutdown began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand positions in September, a indication that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell said earlier this month, which he had earlier attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still released its price statistics for September that indicated that costs are going up, although slowly. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
