Nepal's Electoral Landscape Sees Major Alliance Formed By Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable development ahead of next year's national polls, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the wake of widespread and fatal young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Address Youth Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the issues highlighted by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which led to significant casualties.

"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.

The late summer revolt was triggered by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding allegations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the New Political Partnership

According to the official agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the nation's established political class. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in setting up the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.

Wider Political Discussions Underway

In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with a number of major political leaders. These talks included former prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the protests.

Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The message affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and open atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
