Our Leading Release of the Year: Rosalía's Masterpiece Secures the Number One Spot.

Initially, this work might appear closer to a challenging scholarly examination rather than a new pop project by a musician whose last single was a collaboration with an international K-pop icon. Divided into 4 different sections and sung in 13 languages, this is a dizzying classical-tinged work exploring feminine mystique, spiritual ascent, and bodily change, frequently by way of the prism of different women saints. The end of a relationship—a theme treated with grounded honesty on another major 2025 album—is shot heavenward on this record, supported by the lush presence of a major orchestra and input from a Pulitzer-winning composer among an extensive roll call of contributors. Its sheer ambition by itself makes the efforts of contemporary artists look quite small.

Rising Above Academic Exercise

That Lux manages to escape dry academic chin-stroking is nearly a miracle, and complete credit going to the artist. Although it's not the first time project to alchemize the past with the present, the stakes are much greater here, and the tightrope walk far more dramatic. The element that truly raises this fourth release, beyond its multilayered tunes, dense compositions, and inherent theatricality, proves to be an essential sense of joy. Similar to the legendary artist at her height, you find a wondrous sense to the vocalist's singing which sweeps you into its tornado. When she is tearing hearts in two, the listener nevertheless want to stay right there through the ride.

A Signature Example of Exuberance

This exuberant energy shines brightly during a stirring piano-led ballad inspired by a saint. It bathes in a sorrowful whirlpool over more than four minutes. Suddenly, all the music drops away, to reveal we hear a spontaneous laugh followed by a comment prior to a comically exaggerated orchestral crescendo crashes down with comedic impact. The track then segues to the frenetic single driven by racing strings, a powerful choral group, and a surprise appearance from none other than herself.

"The magic of this album is that the listener rarely exactly know—nor want to know—where it is going next."

Nearly every track finishes at a totally different point than where it began. One moment explores the transient trappings of celebrity with a featherlight symphony before disintegrating in electronic chaos. Elsewhere, a song that recalls her earlier trap-infused work begins off moody and brooding, featuring prowling vocals, until fluttering traditional handclaps and a heavenly chorus enter to soften the song's jagged corners.

The Bridge Between Experiment & Accessibility

Another crucial balancing act on the album involves navigating the gap of radical experimentation and mainstream appeal. This is little coincidence that it has achieved her highest-charting work to crack the upper reaches of key markets: its heart contains a suite of utterly catchy hits. One track performed entirely in the English language swells on a refrain that feels to gather more and more infectious melodies while it spins skyward. That trick gets repeated on a different powerful track that grows and constricts, intertwining layered melodies as an intricate weave.

  • A waltz-like song charms via its playful, theatrical drama and an anthemic hook.
  • In its words, it aligns with cultural honesty of contemporary heartbreak anthems, eviscerating a former partner labeled an "psychological terrorist".
  • Throughout the album, the vocals carry a painted-on edge, akin to a storybook figure concealing a knife: "Top prize in acting like a scoundrel / You've won the trophy of disappointment."

A Maximalist Feast for the Ears

This album represents pop on a maximalist level, a hungry grasp for high Art in an era of impending AI-generated blankness. It rejects self-absorption for glorious elevation, crafting an over-the-top spectacle that masterfully manages its built-in excess. This is an abundant source of buried treasure that takes time to fully mine but doesn't seem like a chore. Where some major releases of 2025 seemed like a meager meal, Lux is a lavish feast where the characters around the table, some intoxicated on holy drink, flutter from discussions about ancient figures, the profound sensation of soul-shattering sadness, and shared stories about useless partners. In essence, it's a modern-day theatrical production from music's most endlessly inventive practitioner.
