Patients Coming Off Weight-Loss Medications Put On Weight Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that individuals who stop using new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users buying these drugs should be aware of the danger of fast weight regain when the treatment ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a return to pre-treatment weight within about 18 months.

Weighing Approaches

The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.

The team note that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically have a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Experts suggest the way of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened regain.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than normal may cause the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Condition?

The NHS advise the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals argue that, considering the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered ongoing.

This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs report a intense resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if a trigger activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled a patient.

The struggle is exacerbated if users have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Recent estimates show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined behavioural management.
